As a part of the pre-conference events for the Trauma Conference in 2020, the Surgery Interest Group organized a first of its kind ‘Surgery Olympics’ event which was a competitive event based on surgical and trauma skills. The Olympics saw over a hundred participants from all over Karachi, who were divided into teams and rotated in a circuit of stations including the following stations:
- CPR
- Scrubbing In
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Instrument Identification
- Wound Dressing
- IV Cannulation
The participants were in randomly assigned teams, and had to complete tasks as well as a crossword puzzle based on trauma care. This activity allowed them to exhibit their surgical skills, trauma care skills, time management skills, as well as their teamwork skills. All the stations were centered around reading material and videos provided to the participants before the workshop.
In the spirit of imparting knowledge, along with the olympics SIG also organized two workshops:
- Suturing and Knot-Tying with Dr. Fatima Mustansir (‘19)
- Foley Catheter Insertion with Dr. Ahmad Bashir (‘14)
All in all, this was a fun-filled and action-packed event that allowed the students to test the waters and exhibit their skills, while making new friends.
