Three AKU Alumni return to homeland to join NICVD, KHI

Three distinguished AKU Alumni, Dr. Sohail Khan [MBBS ’03], Dr. Abdul Hakeem [MBBS ’03] and Dr. Sabha Bhatti [MBBS ’03] have recently returned to Pakistan to join NICVD, Karachi.

Dr. Sohail Khan has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer (acting) of NICVD with immediate effect. He is Diplomate American Board of Cardiology, Diplomate American Board of Interventional Cardiology and has a special interest in medical education and training other healthcare providers and nursing staff. Having recently completed his Master Degree in Healthcare Management from Harvard University, he is passionate about providing quality cardiovascular healthcare to his patients at minimum cost.

Dr. Abdul Hakeem has joined NICVD as Professor of Cardiology, having left Rutgers University, NJ, USA. He has been the Principal Investigator of multiple randomized trials, is a prolific researcher having published over 130 peer reviewed papers, several of which are in high impact journals. His is an authority in structural heart interventions, with his work cited in the ACC/ESC guidelines and the Mayo Cardiovascular Board Review. He graduated from the Aga Khan University Medical College in 2003 at the top of his class, receiving the best graduate award.

Dr. Abdul Hakeem, Dr. Sabha Bhatti

Joining her classmates at NICVD is Professor of Cardiology, Dr. Sabha Bhatti. She is a world renowned expert in cardiac imaging including cardiac CT and MRI. She has had an illustrious and prolific academic publishing record with major publications on the prognostic value of various cardiac imaging modalities including nuclear cardiology, cardiac MRI and stress echo in major impact journals. Her work has been cited in various clinical guidelines including ACC, AHA and ASNC amongst others. Given her extensive experience she has been tasked to establish state of the art advance cardiac imaging facilities and physician training at NICVD. She will head the department of noninvasive cardiology and imaging for NICVD and all its satellite locations.

It is most heartening to see such decorated alumni return back to their home country to serve in a public setting at NICVD and serve poor patients who cannot afford healthcare. Our prayers and support are with them, and we wish them the best of luck with their noble endeavours!
