Dr. Javairiah Fatima [MBBS, ’04] has been nominated as one of the area’s best physicians by Washingtonian 2023. She is the only female surgeon in the US who runs her own clinical trial with the FDA for creating and implanting fenestrated devices for complex aortic aneurysms.
Javairiah Fatima, MD, an Associate Professor of Surgery, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery, serves as the Co-Director of the Complex Aortic Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Site Director of the MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. She also serves as the co-editor of the thoracic section of the Endovascular Today Journal. As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Fatima performs the whole spectrum of vascular surgery – both open and endovascular procedures including treatment of mesenteric disease, peripheral vascular disease, and carotid disease, among others. She specializes in open and endovascular aortic surgeries, aortic dissections, and fenestrated aortic aneurysm repair surgery (FEVAR).
Dr. Fatima is one of a handful vascular surgeons nationally, and the only female vascular surgeon to have an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) to perform and study fenestrated endovascular repair of complex aneurysms of thoracoabdominal aorta including aneurysms secondary to aortic dissection. Dr. Fatima believes in working across specialties to provide care to a patient, and in the necessity of research and education to providing quality patient care. Since focusing her attention on branch graft technology and learning the FEVAR procedure during her fellowship, Dr. Fatima has been the principal investigator on several studies related to branch graft and fenestrated technology and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored multiple book chapters.
